Customer Groups

info

Customer groups are available on Standard and Pro plans.

Customer groups let you organize customers into segments based on tags and optionally associate automatic discounts with those segments.

How Groups Work

A customer group is defined by:

  • Group name -- a descriptive label (e.g., "VIP Customers," "Wholesale Buyers")
  • Tag -- the Shopify customer tag that identifies members of this group
  • Auto-discount (optional) -- a discount that is automatically suggested when a group member checks out

When a customer with a matching tag is added to an order at checkout, the POS checks if they belong to any group with an auto-discount. If so, the discount is suggested to the staff member, who can apply or dismiss it.

Creating a Group

  1. Go to Customers > Groups in the POS sidebar
  2. Click New Group
  3. Enter the group name
  4. Enter the tag that identifies group members
  5. Optionally set an auto-discount (percentage or fixed amount)
  6. Save

Managing Groups

From the groups list, you can:

  • Edit -- change the name, tag, or discount
  • Delete -- remove the group (does not remove tags from customers)

Adding Customers to Groups

Customers are added to groups by having the matching tag on their profile. You can add tags:

  • Manually from the customer profile
  • In bulk from Shopify admin (Customers > select customers > Add tags)
tip

Use consistent tag naming to keep groups organized. For example, use lowercase tags like vip, wholesale, staff-discount to avoid duplicates from inconsistent capitalization.

Auto-Discount Behavior

When a group has an auto-discount configured:

  1. Staff selects a customer at checkout
  2. The POS detects the customer's group membership
  3. A suggestion appears: "Apply VIP discount (10% off)?"
  4. Staff can apply or dismiss the suggestion
  5. The discount is recorded on the order like any other discount

Auto-discounts respect role-based discount limits. If a cashier cannot apply custom discounts, the auto-discount suggestion will not appear for them.
